Council goes one up for women with new panel

THE STAR Friday February 25, 2011

BUKIT MERTAJAM: A Gender Mainstreaming Ad-hoc Committee will be set up in the Seberang Prai Municipal Council to ensure gender fairness in the council’s policies and operations. Council president Mokhtar Mohd Jait said the committee would, among others, promote fairness in terms of job opportunities, wages, promotion and resource allocations in the municipality. “I have agreed in principle to the forming of a Gender Mainstreaming Ad-hoc Committee as suggested by councillor Sim Chee Keong in his adjournment speech,” he said after chairing a full council meeting here yesterday. Sim said the committee, which was believed to be the first of its kind in the country, would help provide women equal opportunities and benefits in male-dominated environments. He said almost 36% of the council’s current workforce were women which he described as a positive sign. He, however, noted that there were only three women state assemblymen in Penang and three women councillors in the Seberang Prai Municipal Council. Bukit Mertajam Member of Parliament Chong Eng, who is also Wanita DAP chief, praised the council for taking the step.
